5 out of 5 stars Great Quality Laptop!   July 21, 2010

Pros: This is an excellent laptop! It is very classy looking and well built. I'm not sure if the people that say the touchpad is awful are people that are just not used to this kind of touchpad or maybe they have received a bad unit but it is by far the best click pad out of anyone out there and has a satisfying right and left click. It is obviously not as simple to use as a regular touchpad, but once you get the idea of how to use it, it works great. Also, they just released a new firmware/software update for the touchpad that might be what is helping out. Overall, the laptop is actually lighter than I thought it would be. The 14" screen is an absolute perfect size. I was all about 13.3" screens before this, but the extra .7" helps out in screen real estate as well as making enough room for the case to hold a full DVD multi drive w/o adding a ton of bulk. Nice touches such as polished metal edges to the keyboard and touchpad surround. The dedicated multimedia keys are also convenient.

Cons: None really. While a regular touchpad might be easier to use for some, I actually prefer it, as for me it works flawlessly.

Other Thoughts: The metal construction is very nice with etched patterns that are actually not as noticeable or bad looking like I though they might be. I have heard comments that say that they think the laptop is pink. I can thankfully say that it is not pink, it is a bronze metal color that shows up in dim light, unless you think bronze is pink. In bright light the color is more of a silver color. It is also sufficiently thin with tapered edges that actually make it seem even thinner than it is. The keyboard is also very comfortable to use. The best thing about it is that the battery is fully enclosed in the case and does not stick out at all! Batteries that protrude out had been a common design and I am very happy that with this laptop the battery is flush with the bottom. I spent a long time looking for a laptop for myself and am absolutely happy with my decision to go with this one. I recommend that anyone looking for a great looking laptop with a ton of power to definitely check this one out!

5 out of 5 stars C'est Chic!   July 27, 2010

I love this laptop! Not only is it chic and slender, it is durable and easily packed for travel. Many users need a little time to get used to the touchpad, but the adjustment period is very short.

This light, slender laptop has a 14" screen which is a very reasonable size. I like the metal frame surrounding the keypad and touchpad as that enhances their appearance. The battery is tucked away inside so it is not readily visible. Cosmetics notwithstanding, this is still an excellent computer and it has multimedia keys as an added good feature.

If you need a good bag to transport this computer, I recommend Caselogic ZLC-116 Professional 16-Inch Laptop Case (Black) as this is a very durable bag that is neither cumbersome nor heavy. You can also pack 2 laptops in it!

In short, I love this computer. It requires a smooth, gentle touch and users can "jump onto the saddle" quite easily. The edges are slightly rounded.

If you are looking for a high quality laptop, then you seriously want to consider this one.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice Computer, touchpad problem software fixable   August 28, 2010
P. Langenfeld (Tucson Arizona)

Don't worry about the resolution. The display is big, vivid, crystal clear, and sharp as can be. The monitor bests my old tough IBM X41 laptop tablet monitor by a wide margin.

Don't worry about the touchpad being too problematic (it may be occasionally erratic and buggy when you get your computer, as mine was). I downloaded a new driver and the latest bios program from the HP support site, and in a few minutes everything now works reasonably adequate as most touch pads do... good, but slightly annoying compared to a mouse or ibm/lenovo track point. The user who reported no problems though, must have already had the fix when they got the computer.

I found the keyboard to be crisp and accurate and very close to my best keyboard ever IBM Thinkpad.

Your best bet with any inherently funky touch pad, in my opinion, is to get a nice reasonably compact bluetooth mouse. I have a Logitech Travel Mouse wich works with the built in Bluetooth in the computer and fits perfectly into the palm of my hand. I comfortably sit with the computer in my lap and use the mouse comfortably on the armrest of my chair! Everything works as easy as (and as powerful as) a desk top now.

This computer is fast and as light as many computers with no CD/DVD drive at all, yet comes with one. I easily cleaned up the computer and deleted the 60 day trail of MS Office and Norton Utility software and installed my own replacements.

Windows 7 is a relatively fast well written operating system (anything better than Vista though) and a delight to use. Home Basic is perfect and runs well with 1-2GB memory, and 4GB is a welcome over kill. The fast large 500gb hard drive is also a delight.

At $750 delivered, this computer bests Costcos current out the door with tax offering of around $850 (on sale, no less) by around $100.

Buy a Logitech blue tooth travel mouse and all is well with the world with this wonderful light, big screened, attractive, very powerful, great typing, high storage, and smoking fast portable computer offering by HP.

By the way, Amazon's Nevada shipping facility dropped the ball with packaging. It had the little HP computer box sitting on the bottom of a large box with no air pillows underneath, in spite of there being plenty of room for them. A poor way to treat an expensive investment and down right careless.

5 out of 5 stars Better than a netbook, and I'll tell you why...   August 28, 2010
Matt (Fayetteville, NC)
Intro
After doing 2 weeks worth of research, I decided to get the HP dm4-1060us to replace an aging Thinkpad R50(from 2004). I've been using it for over a week and so far love it. I wanted a lightweight, but functional laptop capable of multi-tasking. I looked at several of the 12" and 13" screen netbooks, but was turned off by the lack of cd/dvd (optic) drive and the computing power to multitask. I also looked into the tech support ratings for the different manufacturers. LaptopMag.com did a nice review (http://www.laptopmag.com/mobile-life/tech-support-showdown-2010.aspx?page=15). I customized mine at the HP site and paid a little more, but if you can get it under $750, then it is a REALLY good value.
Portability
I couldn't find a better deal for a 14"/lightweight (3-5lb) notebook with a dual core processor and cd/dvd drive built in. This baby weighs in at a mere 4.4lb/2kg which is only a half pound more than most of the 12" or 13" netbooks. That is impressive considering the lack of optic drives in all of the netbooks. It measures 13.4"x9" and is only 1" thick, so it slides easily into my backpack. The large hard drive (500gb), webcam, microphone, and decent touchpad has eliminated the need for me to bring any of those external devices along when I travel away from home.
Keyboard & Touchpad
It's the first time I've used a chiclet/island style keyboard, but I haven't had any problems transitioning. One of the odd things about this keyboard is I have to press "fn" to use any of the f-functions. For instance, if I want to use the help feature (F1), I have to press "fn" and F1. Normally, it's the other way around. I'm not sure if there's a setting I can change for that because it hasn't become that much of a nuisance.
Other Hardware
The 500gb hard drive spinning at 7200rpm means I have plenty of storage and quick access to it. The 4gb ram (expandable to 8gb) coupled with an Intel i5 dual core processor running at 2.26GHz results in some major computing/multi-tasking power. I can easily burn cd's & dvd's while surfing the internet or using an office application. After using it for a couple hours, the keyboard and underside are still cool. I haven't connected my laptop to a TV yet using the HDMI-out, but it is there. The Altec Lansing speakers are a little tinny, but they are loud and have a multitude of settings to configure to your liking. The laptop also has a fingerprint scanner for an added measure of security when logging in. I don't use this feature (yet), but it is nice to know it's there.
Webcam
My wife said the picture quality of the webcam was nice on her end. It does work well in the low-light conditions of a hotel room. The HP MediaSmart Webcam software has some cool features such as: face detection (webcam zooms in only on the face and tracks it), motion detection (records video when movement detected), change resolution of the video/pictures taken, and you can add little graphics around your face while you're talking. That's not a complete list of the features, but the ones I've tried out so far.
Wifi
It comes with 802.11 b/g/n and bluetooth. I get great signal strength in any hotspot I've been in so far. The reviews I've read seem to back-up my opinion that it has a nice antenna.
Operating System (OS)
It came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and I've never used Windows 7. It's a bit of a learning curve coming from Windows XP Home, but sort of similar to the Windows Vista 64-bit I have on my desktop computer. In fact, I haven't noticed any differences between the two. There may be some differences in the resources it eats up. It takes about 1min30sec to start-up and get to the desktop.
Instant-On
One of the coolest features is the HP QuickWeb instant-on. Within a few seconds of pressing the power button, a screen appears with some basic functions. I can get onto the internet, use Skype, check my email, listen to music, and some other functions. I can also access an external hard drive if it is attached. This feature allows me to save my battery for watching movies on the airplane. I can easily switch to Windows7, and the option is there to disable that feature. I really like it because I can turn it on real quick, check my email or Facebook, then shut it down without running down the battery while I'm travelling.
Bundled Software (Bloatware)
The specs state that it comes with bundled software, and most laptops & computers do. I didn't have any issues uninstalling the stuff I didn't want and ended up keeping most of it. It has Microsoft Office 2010 saved, so all you have to do is get an activation key. I haven't activated it, but I can use MS Word and Excel with all features activated listed under "Microsoft Office Starter."
Cons
I don't have any strong Cons, just some minor inconveniences that are easily overlooked such as: the little lights that stay on when I put it to "Sleep" mode (they turn off in "Hibernate"), the widescreen (I prefer a more squarish screen), and the headphone & microphone jacks are hard to distinguish because the symbols are on the bottom of the laptop.
I'll try to remember to update this review after I've used it a little more. If you would prefer a review from a professional, LaptopMag.com posted a full review with some benchmark tests and comparisons of the HP dm4-series at: http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/hp-dm4.aspx.

5 out of 5 stars exactly what I wanted   August 28, 2010
leah
I love this computer! It is super powerful, lightweight, stylish and has awesome battery power. Plus it runs pretty quietly and doesnt get heat up much even when its really working. I have it plugged into an lcd monitor as well as a large HD television and it plays beautiful graphics. It is super zippy with the Adobe CS4 suite and hasnt crashed on me once yet.
I was originally thinking of buying a desktop but when I found this laptop on sale for $600 after coupons and rebates, I couldnt turn it down. I keep it plugged into my monitor most of the time, but im so glad I went with the laptop as I've found I actually use the portability way more than i thought.
Only con is the trackpad occasionally goes a bit haywire. Ive noticed other people mentioning this as well. I downloaded the newest drivers but still having occasional problems. Hopefully it is a software problem that can be fixed down the line. And for now, it still isnt enough of a problem to keep me from giving this laptop 5 stars.
